Neck Pain is the second most common thing we treat after low back pain.
Interestingly though, with the increased use of computers in both work and home life - neck and shoulder complaints are very much on the rise.
Postural strain is a term given to achy neck, shoulders and often upper arms as a result of long periods of time in a static position - be it at a desk, in meetings or sitting on the sofa browsing for a holiday!
Sometimes this can go one step further and bring on arm pain or symptoms of an impinged or irritated nerve. This includes pain down the arm and hand and possibly tingling and numbness into the fingers.
Headaches can be a very debilitating condition and often are simply coming from the neck (termed cervicogenic headaches). Many people suffer in silence and are unaware that chiropractic can greatly reduce these symptoms, as long as the correct diagnosis is made. Your chiropractor will do many tests to make the appropriate diagnosis. particularly to differentiate from Migraines which we may help also.
Whiplash type symptoms are another common presentation, most usually after an injury either from a car bump or even falling and hitting your head or jarring yourself. There is a lot of evidence now that recommends that relatively quick treatment can decrease the long term problems related to this type of injury
Chiropractic care has great benefits to all of the above and there is a lot of support that the treatments we use are safe and hugely beneficial.
For the great majority of patients with acute and chronic neck pain, and those with cervicogenic headache, spinal manipulation is similarly recommended, most recently and authoritatively by the Bone and Joint Decade Neck Pain Task Force (see below)
(Haldeman S, Carroll LJ, Cassidy JD, and the Scientific Secretariat, Bone and Joint Decade 2000-2010 Task Force on Neck Pain and its Associated Disorders) (2008)
